An Accurate Prediction

(thanks to AKT for finding this gem).

“Consider a future device for individual use, which is a sort of mechanized private file and library. It needs a name, and, to coin one at random, “memex” will do. A memex is a device in which an individual stores all his books, records, and communications, and which is mechanized so that it may be consulted with exceeding speed and flexibility. It is an enlarged intimate supplement to his memory.

It consists of a desk, and while it can presumably be operated from a distance, it is primarily the piece of furniture at which he works. On the top are slanting translucent screens, on which material can be projected for convenient reading. There is a keyboard, and sets of buttons and levers. Otherwise it looks like an ordinary desk.”

As We May Think”. Dr. Vannevar Bush. The Atlantic, July 1945.

Borders vs Borderlands – A tale of two bookstores.

Posted on Friday, September 10th, 2010 by Ian Tuttle

As the great tectonic plates of the book industry shift, many armchair bloggers prognosticate the extinction of the bookstore.  Certainly some venerable institutions are facing brutal natural selections; witness the graceless death of the dinobookstaur, Borders:

But what’s this?  A mere mile away, a cunning indie bookstore is evolving, adapting, and thriving:

Borderlands is a niche indie bookstore specializing in sci-fi, fantasy, and horror.  Recognizing the dangers that our fast-paced multimedia world presents for poor defenseless booksellers, Borderlands capitalizes on its expertise and narrow focus.

Staff picks help guide your selection, and Borderlands Cafe is right next door.

I’ve never seen local art on display at my local Borders, but at Borderlands it’s the norm….

While it might be a few bucks more to buy a book from Borderlands, I go there for the expertise that only a specialty boutique can offer.  I can sip a coffee and geek out about cyberpunk with other fans, get a recommendation for the next great graphic novel, and get the authoritative edition of XKCD, all under one local roof!
